University of Waterloo Hero Graphic
The need to have a modern design graphic reflecting the new physical placement of the iconic University of Waterloo, coupled with a building or imagery that is unique to the University of Waterloo brand.
“How do we encapsulate the essence of University of Waterloo with an instantly identifiable graphic?”
For my research, I took an exploration trip of the campus, looking for buildings and/or iconography that stands out. During the process, I discovered the Dana Porter Library - an architecture that has existed for decades and has become an identifiable landmark for the University of Waterloo community. The same sentiment was shared by my peers and coworkers.
Working in Adobe Illustrator, with a minimal design perspective and being attentive to which details to emphasize and which ones to simplify, I arrived at the following design. It replicated the exact view you might encounter if you visit Waterloo for a campus tour.
The following graphic has since been used for staff handouts, as a back ground for many YouTube and TikTok videos, and made available to students as a Teams/Zoom background, and a desktop and phone wallpaper.
Student Success Office Anti-Racism Initiative Handouts
Bringing the Student Success Office, and the Waterloo community as a whole together, to lay our steps and ideals that the members of the community must take to actively work towards anti-racism.
The Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) office is a close partner to the Student Success Office (SSO), and as the marketing team was looking for a project to collaborate - an infographic for the steps that were being taken under the Anti-Racism initiative came up. I led the project, working closely with communication officers and curating the content.
Once the content was ready to go, I got the necessary approvals from management in the SSO and the EDI. Eventually working with Adobe Indesign to create a table-top text focussed infographic using the University of Waterloo design guidelines, creating a piece that would be easy to read and can be put in every workspace for our peers.
After the table top info graph was received positively by management and my coworkers in the office, I was provided with a chance to work with the EDI office again on another explanatory text focussed graphic.
UWaterloo How-To Video Series
Developing a series of videos for new and current undergraduates explaining administrative processes and tackling day to day questions received by the Registrar’s Office.
The ‘How To’ video series allowed me the opportunity bring my skills as writer and videographer to the workplace. I collaborated with the communications officers in the marketing team and we wrote scripts for the most popular queries that students have, and what would be a good-to-know for incoming students. Once scripting was complete, I drew up treatments and storyboarded the scripts. After we got the approvals for the scripts from all necessary campus partners, I set up meetings with talent and briefed them on the scripts and developed a shoot schedule. We then recorded the videos in the university with professional lighting, sound and recording equipment. Finally, I worked on post-production using Adobe Premiere Pro, and Final Cut Pro - removing green screens, and placing the talent in different environments depending on the script, joining different cuts and adding special effects and transitions to elevate the videos.
Here are some of the videos from the series -
